The Dominican Republic (DR) could be “like South Africa after de-regulation” with small exporters fighting for a place in the market, Savid has warned.

The DR exporter said the country would suffer from the EU’s banana trade deal and signs were already in abundance that a fragmented market is hurting the country’s banana exports.

It is believed the Caribbean nation on the island of Hispaniola, may suffer from smaller, less experienced growers complicating the supply chain and spreading disease through poor crop management.

Before Christmas an outbreak of sigatoka was largely attributed to small farms located close together. Savid’s European manager Martijn van Es urged the industry to consolidate, saying: “The fragmentation of the supply base has meant things have been more complicated and difficult in the last year. We are trying to consolidate our grower base and work with 10-15 grower associations.”
