Press reports in the Dominican Republic have indicated that heavy rainfall over the past three weeks is causing the spread of black sigatoka disease in the banana crop.
Half of the country’s banana ouput is organic, much of it destined for UK supermarkets. Producers quoted in the national daily El Nuevo Diaro said they feared earnings could fall by 25 per cent this year to $150 million as a result of the disease.
