Dirty, but not scrubbers

Cornish Early potato producers are getting dirty with a new promotional campaign.

The growers are launching the Deliciously Dirty campaign to explain to consumers why their new potatoes are sold dirty. Cornish Earlies are the first new potatoes to be harvested in the UK and are grown by a group of growers in the mild climate of the south-western tip of Cornwall.

The potatoes will be identified by a logo which will be used at point of sale in supermarkets, independent retailers, greengrocers, wholesalers, farm shops and even on menus.

Producers hope the logo will invite people to ask for Cornish Earlies by name - rather than buy imported produce.

Spokesman John Forster said: “We harvest the Cornish Early in early to mid April, and because of the short time they are in the ground, they do not develop a tough complete skin.

“Our message to shoppers and caterers is simply to rub the small potatoes rather than scrub them.”

The campaign is an initiative led by a small number of potato growers and supported by Cornwall Taste of the West and Penwith District Council.
