David Cameron hosted supermarket representatives in Downing St this week

Initiatives such as Tesco’s Global Food Sourcing scheme could bolster third party businesses and drive employment.

Firms offering logistics and packing solutions may expand if included in the UK’s biggest supermarket’s direct sourcing scheme, according to an employment expert.

Prime minister David Cameron met representatives from every UK industry, including all the major supermarkets, at 10 Downing Street on Monday to discuss employment initiatives.

The PM’s office estimates that 300,000 private sector jobs have been created over the past six months and is looking at methods to drive further job creation.

This week, Morrisons announced it is to create 6,000 new jobs and Waitrose 3,000 while Sainsbury’s unveiled a three-year plan to create 20,000 new positions.

David Macaulay, managing director of specialist recruitment business Eden, explained: “As we have seen, supermarkets are increasing their headcount through initiatives like Tesco’s Global Food Sourcing and this will in turn lead to more recruitment within the logistics, freight-forwarding and third-party packing businesses.

“Even though supermarket growth is quite slow in the UK, there are still a number of opportunities for supermarkets to grow their national presence either with new stores in the area or new formats.”
