Digital food safety system is 'no-brainer' to use

A new online food safety management system, used and endorsed by the John Lewis Partnership, has been officially launched by Hygiene Audit Systems, one of the UK’s leading food safety specialists.

Hawk is a complete online food safety monitoring solution equipped with the very latest web technology enabling real-time control, allowing users to store and view records anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

It also comes with the full technical support and expertise of a specialist private consultancy.

Dr Lisa Ackerley, managing director of St Albans-based Hygiene Audit Systems, said the firm is very excited to finally be bringing Hawk to market.

“It promises to revolutionise the food safety industry and make compliance and due diligence simpler, cheaper and easier to achieve,” she said.

“By getting accurate information quickly to managers, from temperature and cleaning records to manager’s checks and pest control status, Hawk improves information flow, saves money on paper diaries, saves time on laborious form-filling and considerably improves control, efficiency and safety - all at the touch of a button.”

Dr Ackerley, winner of the Society of Food Hygiene and Technology’s “Most Significant Contribution to the Food Industry” Award 2011 for raising the profile of food safety, said using it is a “no-brainer”.

“It’s like the transition from writing a letter to using email,” she said. “Environmental Health Officers have been very impressed.”

Hawk uses handheld and automatic monitoring devices to collect essential food safety data, allowing managers to view and control standards via the internet on their PC screen or smart phone.

A simple but user-friendly dashboard display provides a bird’s eye view across any or every part of the business, allowing users to drill down to a faulty fridge, dirty kitchen, undercooked food or missed critical checks.

The John Lewis Partnership (JLP), owner of leading UK retail stores John Lewis and Waitrose, has been using Hawk since trials began and now has the system in place across 58 of its sites, including 29 of its department stores. It remains firmly convinced of the system’s benefits.

Alison Smith, head of food service at JLP, said: “This is a vital tool in our food safety management system and allows us to monitor and identify any issues across our branches at an early stage, enabling us to take any necessary action quickly and efficiently."
