Mangoes: banned

A school has banned pupils from eating kiwifruit and mangoes over allergy fears.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the fruits, along with chocolate and nuts, have been banned from children's lunchboxes at Reigate Park Primary School, in Mackworth, Derbyshirein case staff or pupils suffer a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

The school issued the ban to all 375 pupils from the beginning of the new term.

Staff told parents they were concerned those with allergies may suffer a reaction if they are breathed on by pupils after lunch.

Headteacher Peter Hallsworth told the Daily Telegraph: 'We now have new members of our school who could have their life threatened if they were to come into contact with such products, as it could cause them to have an anaphylactic reaction.

'The ban focuses on pure chocolate and nuts and we have asked parents to not pack those foods into their children's packed lunches.'

Several parents have reportedly criticised the ban, saying children should not be discouraged from consuming fruit.
