Sun Valley Bio Fruit UK has seen the first-ever organic volumes of orange variety Delicia hit UK shores this week.

This is the first time the fruit, grown in South Africa in Kirkwood, Eastern Cape, has been exported as organic, following grower Blackie Swart farm’s full conversion to organic this year, and the orange is exclusive to Sun Valley customers.

Delicia is a strain of Valencia cultivar Midknight, discovered in 1988 on the Rebels Vlie farm by

Dr Tertious Delport.

He noticed that one of the Midknight trees was producing oranges of a larger size, a superior flavour and more like a Navel than a Valencia in internal characteristics. The fruit is also virtually seedless.

Delicia is available in Waitrose, Tesco and Asda.
