More investment must go towards paying for solar and anaerobic digestion projects in farming rather than to “sexier” manufacturing industries such as car production, the shadow secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs has said.

Mary Creagh also told the Oxford Farming Conference there should be a fresh debate on GM and added that over the next decade consumers will want more transparency over carbon emissions in food production through clearer labelling.

This contrasted with comments by Sainsbury’s brand director Judith Batchelar, who said the supermarket would not be carbon labelling food.
