John Fletcher and Lady Jane Garrett have been re-appointed for another three years as members of the Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA).

The CGMA is a statutory corporation that manages New Covent Garden Market.

“All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public,” said a Defra statement.

Fletcher has been a member of the CGMA since 2001. Prior to this he was managing director of Asda and director of the Associated Dairies Group, as well as a founder member of Food From Britain.

Lady Garrett has also been a member of the CGMA since 2001. She is currently chief executive of the Brogdale Horticultural Trust and a council member of the Kent County Agricultural Society.

The re-appointments will start on November 1, 2004 and attract a salary of £8,703 per year.

Neither Fletcher nor Lady Garrett hold any other ministerial appointment. The Covent Garden Market Authority comprises a chairman and six members. These are: Leif Mills CBE (chairman), Alan Cole, Balram (Ram) Gidoomal CBE, Carole Nicholson, David Williams, John Fletcher and Lady Jane Garrett.

The re-appointments have been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice.
