The department of the environment, food and rural affairs, has come to the aid of UK growers affected by the phase out of pesticide methyl bromide.

The government department has commissioned Adas to hold a series of free seminars across the country for protected crop and soft fruit producers.

Protected crop seminars will take place at The Tickled Trout Hotel, Preston, on February 18; Askham Bryan College of Agriculture and Horticulture, York, on February 19; The Poachers Country Inn, Boston, Lincolnshire, on February 25; and The Jarvis Hotel, Chichester, Sussex, on February 27.

The soft fruit seminars are to be held at The Bank House Hotel, Bransford, Worcester, The Smoke House Hotel, Mildenhall, Suffolk, and the Thomas Neame Room, HRI, East Malling, Kent, on March 4,6 and 7 respectively.

Production and use of methyl bromide – a chemical used to control soil-borne pests, diseases and weed seeds – will be phased out in the UK by 2005.

Under the Montreal Protocol, the UK will ban the pesticide because it damages the ozone layer.
