DEFRA has granted approval for Leeds University to conduct a second research trial of genetically modified potatoes this year.

The focus of the research will be on tubers that have been genetically modified to resist infection by potato cyst nematodes.

The university’s application was evaluated by the Advisory Committee of Releases on the Environment, which is satisfied the trial will not have any adverse effect on human or environmental health.

There are, however, precautionary measures attached to the consent for the trial to ensure that GM potato material does not persist at the site once the trial concludes. Harvested GM potatoes from the trial will not enter the food chain for human consumption or as animal feed.
