Peter Dawson is stepping down as managing director of Tozer Seeds after 41 years at the helm.

He has been replaced by Steven Winterbottom who has been with the company for 28 years and takes up the role with immediate effect.

Winterbottom said of Dawson: “As a plant breeder, Peter is unsurpassed, and his long list of achievements include the development of the world’s first hybrid parsnip and celery cultivars.

“Peter’s visionary work with these umbelliferous cousins has resulted in the development of international market leading cultivars such as parsnips, Gladiator and Javelin and the celery hybrids, Victoria and Monterey. These cultivars dominate their market sectors both at home and abroad and have redefined the way parsnip and celery crops are grown and marketed globally.

“Peter’s first love has always been plant breeding and plant breeding is still the core activity of the company. Without doubt the reason that Tozer has survived and is indeed flourishing in the 21st century is entirely down to Peter’s guiding principal that Tozer Seeds continues to invest in breeding.”

The once regional seed company that primarily served the Thames Valley is now an international entity with subsidiaries in the Spain and the US as well as dealers and resellers throughout the world.
