David Read OBE, former JP Fruit Distributors Ltd chief executive, has died at the age of 72.
David retired as chief executive of JP Fruit in May 2002, having worked with the company for almost 25 years.
In 1997, he was awarded an OBE for services to the fruit industry, and was highly respected throughout the fresh produce world.
He set up the Banana Group, which was formed to promote the import of bananas into the UK.
Giles Shapley, customer strategy and marketing director at Dole Fresh UK, said: “He continued to provide valuable support in a consultancy role long after his official retirement, and will be sadly missed. His contribution to the industry was significant. Our thoughts are with his family and close friends at this time.”
