Dame Kelly promotes fruit and veg at Sainsbury's

Sainsbury’s has signed up this week’s new Dame, Kelly Holmes, to front the Sainsbury's Active Kids TV advertising campaign, which encourages as part of its remit consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The ad sees double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly returning to her secondary school in Tonbridge, Kent and meeting her PE teacher Debbie Page.

Speaking at the advertising shoot, Dame Kelly said: “Sainsbury’s Active Kids is a great scheme - I feel strongly that more kids should be offered the opportunity to try out fun activities. Enjoying being active is a springboard to getting involved in sport."

Sainsbury’s Active Kids is designed to support schools and teachers to inspire pupils to get more active, by providing equipment and activities that go beyond the traditional curriculum based sports and PE lessons. From 2nd March 2005 until June 30, every time customers spend £10 at Sainsbury’s they will receive one Active Kids voucher.

To help encourage healthy eating, one extra Active Kids voucher will be issued for every £5 spent on fresh fruit and vegetables. Schools can use vouchers to redeem against a wide range of active equipment and kit - from footballs to space hoppers and trampolines.

There is also the chance to use the vouchers to take groups of children to experience a range of activities including ice-skating, scuba diving and ten-pin bowling for example.

The supermarket is hoping to increase fitness levels in the ten million children that are currently put off sport by the traditional curriculum, and within the first two weeks of launch to schools, over 12,000 have registered for Active Kids.
