The decision is subject to agreement by the council's formal agreement, but if approved funds will be released by the HDC protected crops panel and council from February 2003 for the installation of the latest equipment to demonstrate all-year-round production of cucumbers.
It will provide growers with the information and guidance they need in order to provide uninterrupted supplies of top-quality produce efficiently by maximising production per unit of energy and labour used.
The concept for the demonstration unit has been developed over the last few months by a CGA team led by Rob Jabcobson of STC and secretary of the CGA. Half of the set-up and running costs will be contributed by the association although members are disappointed not to have secured matching funding from Defra 'despite the project meeting many key government objectives'.
