Hurricane Frances got her teeth into areas of Cuba

While all eyes have been on Florida, Cuban citrus growers have been taking a pounding at the hands of the weather.

One of the country’s two major exporters of grapefruit, Citricos Caribe SA, has had its fruit in the north and south west of the island wiped out by hurricane Charley.

Colin Blake, industrial citrus sales manager with importers Fesa UK, said grapefruit production in the Sabre region of Cuba has been largely destroyed.

“The destruction means that Citricos Caribe has no fruit, leaving Grupo BN as the only major exporter of grapefruit from Cuba this year.”

He said Grupo BN’s production on islands off the coast of Cuba had been largely spared from the hurricane’s path.

He added: “At the moment, the country’s orange crop is unaffected by the weather, but producers are now waiting to see the progress of hurricane Ivan which could still cause problems.”

Ivan is expected to hit the south east and north west of Cuba in the next five days.
