Cranberries weather US storms

Figures released by the US department of agriculture’s national agricultural statistics service indicate a large cranberry crop this winter, despite recent hail damage.

According to the service, the state of Wisconsin was on target to produce the largest cranberry crop in US history. Some 3.75 million barrels of the fruit were forecast for the harvest.

This would have been 2.5 per cent up on last season’s record-setting crop of 3.66m barrels.

But severe hailstorms hit cranberry fields in the state last week, the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers’ Association reports, which could knock 300,000 barrels off that total, putting it slightly below last season’s levels.

Southern Wisconsin has benefited from ample rainfall and warm weather this growing season, but Massachusetts will also have a large crop - 1.75m barrels of cranberries are forecast, and New Jersey is due to produce 490,000 barrels.
