Costa Rican banana industry leader, Jorge Sauma of Corbana, has praised Chiquita on the opening of a new biodigester system at the banana multinational’s Costa Rican subsidiary Mundimar.
“As the regulatory body for the Costa Rican banana industry, we encourage any initiative in the banana sector for the greater re-use of inputs. The Chiquita Brands biodigester project fits with the effort of the whole of our industry under our action plan on climate change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2014,” said Sauma.
Chiquita’s new system converts organic material into electrical and heat energy and produces fertiliser. It was opened by Costa Rican president Laura Chinchilla, who congratulated Chiquita on the development.
Costa Rica is aiming to be the world’s first entirely carbon neutral country.
