A Coventry greengrocer is recovering in hospital after being attacked in a nightclub.

Joe Richards, who runs a chain of nine fruit and veg shops across the area, suffered serious head injuries during the attack last weekend.

It came just days after the grocer had provided free fruit and veg for a Christmas dinner for homeless people, local media reported.

Richards, of West Avenue, Stoke, suffered a fractured skull and his brain swelled.

Fortunately, the 36-year-old, who has outlets in Coventry city centre, Earlsdon, Cheylesmore, Ball Hill, and Radford, is now on the mend.

A man has been charged with wounding in connection with the incident and been remanded in custody.
