The National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) named New Covent Garden Market (NCGM) as the best wholesale market in the UK at its Building Better Markets’ Conference in Birmingham last month.

Jan Lloyd, chief executive of Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) accepted the trophy from celebrity chef Thomasina Miers. Lloyd said: “I am thrilled that NCGM has been recognised as the best wholesale market. As with any award, our success is due to a team effort, whether that be handling waste or working with schools. We are fortunate to have a team dedicated to working tirelessly to improve NCGM for its tenants and customers. If we can win an award like this with a market that is 35 years old, think what we will be able to achieve once NCGM is redeveloped.”

Also speaking at the conference was the minister for local government, Rosie Winterton, who said: ‘The winners of Markets of the Year 2010 Awards are fantastic examples of how the best innovative markets are thriving. I’m delighted to meet the winners today and congratulate them on their triumph’
