A Covent Garden Market veteran has died at the age of 90, leaving a legacy of two further generations in the fruit trade.
Ken Brown, who died suddenly on April 11, first became a growers' salesman in Covent Garden in 1933. Aged just 14, he started work with his father Percy for J Bartholomew & Sons, growers from Southleet, Kent.
Apart from World War Two, Ken continued in the market until 1970 when he retired from the trade to develop his fishing-tackle shop in Bromley, Kent.
He is survived by his daughter Kay and sons Ian and Graham. Ian has his own business Side Salads on New Covent Garden Market and Graham runs his own business JJ Cheney Ltd on Western International Market.
Graham’s son Paul, the fourth generation of this wholesaling family, is a director in his father’s firm.
Ken will be greatly missed not just by his children, but also by his six grand-children and six great-grandchildren. His funeral is at 2.15pm at Beckenham Crematorium on 28 April.
Donations can be sent via Chappells, Locksbottom, Kent to the Alzheimer’s Association and the RNLI.
