Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) celebrated its Year of Food and Farming school project on Wednesday by presenting the winning schools with their prizes.

Along with Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) and Wandsworth Borough Council, New Covent Garden Market (NCGM) has been part of the Feeling Good, Eating Well school project, which has seen seven primary schools in the locality of the market welcome the Year of Food and Farming into their curriculum.

The school projects involved visits to Horton Kirby Environmental Education Centre in Kent, Kelsey’s Farm located just out of London, allotments and NCGM. Each school also had to grow its own edible garden as part of the project, which launched in February.

Scared Heart RC Primary School and St George’s Primary School won joint first prize for their projects, and both received a cheque for £250 from the CGMA.

Gary Marshall, chairman of Covent Garden Tenants' Association, said: “I am really pleased that this fantastic project has happened. Their enthusiasm, excitement and willingness to learn have been amazing.

“We have drummed up so much excitement from this project. We may be shaping the fruit buyers and chefs of tomorrow.”

Although the Year of Food and Farming initiative official ends at the end of July, CGMA has plans to continue the school project with the same schools at the start of the academic year, as well as welcome secondary schools to the project.
