Independent retailers Malcolm and Sue Hendy have opened a fruit and vegetable ‘superstore’ on a Cornish industrial estate, local paper TheCornishman has reported.
The couple, who already run the greengrocers in Causewayhead, Penzance, said the response to new Thornes Fruit and Veg Superstore has been “fantastic”.
Located on Long Rock Industrial Estate, just outside of Penzance, the new superstore is open seven days a week and offers a wide range of local fruit and vegetables, as well as some dried goods and one line of pre-packed fresh meats.
Top four retailers Morrisons and Sainsbury’s are already located on the industrial estate.
“So much seems to be going out of town nowadays and so many people have cars that Sue and I have been talking for a while about doing something like this,” Hendy told the paper.
“We find that people want to buy local and we are giving them that opportunity because at the moment the supermarkets are taking too big a chunk of the market,” he said.
Hendy added that he would never shut the Penzance store, which he said has a “loyal” customer base.
