Costa Rican firm's pineapple exports to UK hit by rain

Costa Rica’s Nayudel Tropical Produce has said its exports of golden pineapple to the UK have been challenged in recent months by rain that has delayed the maturing of the fruit.

The general manager Herrera Nayudel told FPJ the company has been managing to ship size 5,6,7 and 8 pineapples to the UK every week but shipments to Asda have been affected.

"We have a big program with Asda in sizes 9,10 so we don't have availability on those sizes," he said.

The rain means crops need much more care to stay healthy.

“Due to rain, the fruit can absorb water, which affects its internal condition, crops become more vulnerable to disease," Nayudel said.

The company exports to the UK, Holland, Spain, Russia, Turkey and the United States.

Herrera has said the firm wants to develop even more markets in the UK, France and Holland and is “open to explore all markets and adapt to each of their needs".
