Fresh produce supplies in Cornwall have escaped relatively unscathed from the barrage of rain and subsequent flooding that has hit the region this week.

A multimillion-pound mopping-up operation is under way in Cornwall after flash floods forced hundreds of people from their homes and devastated businesses.

But the problems have not hit the main growing areas in the region, instead hitting tourist destinations such as Lostwithiel.

Supplies were hit by closures to the main A30 and A38 roads in and out of Cornwall on Wednesday which prevented some deliveries.

Martin Baldry, depot manager at Bristol Fruit Sales which manages the Growfair - Pride of Cornwall brand, told freshinfo: “It has not really affected the growing areas which are in one line across the centre of Cornwall. There has been some heavy rain on crops but it has not severely affected production.

“There were logistical problems with the roads being closed but everything seems to be back on track now.”
