Philip Pyror, left, with his Cornish crop

Last week saw the first arrivals of Cornish maincrop potatoes into Asda stores across the county, following the success of the early season crop.

The locally grown and packed potatoes are available in Cornish stores within hours of leaving the field, ensuring product reaches consumers in as fresh a condition as possible.

FG Pryor & Son, who farm at Colwyn Farm, Perranwell Station, Truro, are growing the potatoes. Philip Pryor said: “These are locally grown potatoes, especially for the customer.”

Asda potato buyer Drew Kirk said: “Following the success of the early Cornish potato season, we are now seeing the arrival of our maincrop product in store, which offers a local product for the Asda customer.

“We believe that we have the right grower base in place which is ideally situated to service the needs of the customer, with the right quality at the right price. Local selling will streamline the food chain, removing increasingly unpopular food miles, and speed up the process from field to plate.”

The Cornish product is easy to locate in store, as the trays have Cornish liners and the packs have a ‘Grown in Cornwall’ label on them.

The potatoes are available in Asda’s Falmouth, Bodmin and St Austell stores.
