Convenient salad mix in at Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s has launched a new salad mix targeted at the convenience market.

Abbey View Produce (AVP) is to supply 5,000 packs of the salad line into 300 Sainsbury’s convenience stores nationwide.

The 300g packs contain Little Gem lettuce, portions of cucumbers and tomatoes.

AVP’s technical director Stephen Hedderly said the convenience market has developed over the last five years, driven by “retailers’ ability to open stores in areas where there will be convenience traffic, for example train stations, airports and more significantly over recent years, petrol forecourts”.

He said: “Supermarkets also have a huge amount of data about their customers by store and can target very closely ranges to suit specific stores’ customer requirements.”

Hedderly added: “Clever, innovative merchandising and ranging in stores has had a huge impact. For example, in most stores the area designated for sandwiches now has a huge amount of SKUs apart from sandwiches to try to tempt the hungry lunch-time customer without them needing to go into the main store.”
