Demand for year-round asparagus supply has increased dramatically during 2007, according to Worcestershire importer Scott Farms UK Ltd.

The firm has seen a 700 per cent increase in demand over the last year, with 900 cases being imported during December 2006 rising to 7,000 cases in May this year.

“The demand for asparagus from abroad has increased dramatically, and we believe this follows a rise in popularity from the British consumer, aware of not only the health aspects of the vegetable but a confidence in cooking with asparagus as well,” said Simon Hobbs from Scott Farms.

“We believe that this demand is set to continue as consumers look for an all-round year of supply to complement the home-grown asparagus season here in the UK,” he added.

Scott Farms UK has exclusivity on Snow Flight asparagus from Seattle, the US, guaranteeing supply from April to June. Supply from the end of June to December comes from Peru from Proagro, and from January to April from Mexico, with the exclusive brand Road Runner.
