Consumers are now conscious of the origins of food’s packaging as well as the food itself, a new survey has found.

A poll by produce packaging firm Sharpak has revealed that consumers take a real interest in the origins of their food and its packaging, with a strong preference for local sourcing even at a cost.

Some 82 per cent of consumers surveyed by Sharpak want retailers to display the origin of food packaging as well as the food itself and 78 per cent state that they would even be willing to pay extra for locally sourced packaging.

Andrew Copsonm md of Sharpak Yate, said: “Whilst only a single survey, these results do confirm that consumers take environmental issues very seriously, and even in these lean times may be prepared to pay a few pence extra for locally sourced products packed in locally sourced packaging.

“We have been aware of consumers’ concerns for some time now, which is one of the reasons we conducted this survey.”

“In addition to the myriad of low carbon products and manufacturing techniques we offer, we have always been conscious of supplying locally made packaging to local food growers and producers.”

The survey also revealed that consumers believe that the food industry has done a good job in using recycled products in their packaging.
