Fruit and vegetables appear to be top of consumers’ minds when it comes to competition issues surrounding the big supermarkets.
The Daily Mirror published a selection of its readers’ views following the announcement of a potential Competition Commission investigation into the big multiples, and many of the comments cited fruit and vegetables as an issue.
The majority of the views described fresh produce quality as poor in the big chains.
Liz, from Belfast told the newspaper’s website: “The fruit in our supermarkets is rubbish. You buy a piece of fruit that seems ripe, by next day it is beginning to rot. Where have all the mouth-watering peaches, strawberries, plums etc. gone?”
Other views focused on the retail emphasis on cosmetic appearance rather than taste.
Another reader added: “I would like to see more British fruit and veg sold in our supermarkets.”
