Conference to tackle water issues

The Environment Agency will discuss the implications of new water legislation and the rules governing future water abstraction at a British Potato Council (BPC) sponsored conference in Peterborough on February 24.

The BPC urges potato growers to attend the one-day conference organised by the UK Irrigation Association (UKIA) at the Orton Hall Hotel.

Delegates will hear head of Water Resources at the Environment Agency Ian Barker provide a detailed insight of the new Water Act and how this will affect farmers. The conference will also discuss key issues like how to demonstrate water efficiency, water trading, setting up abstractor groups and how to tackle water allocation and its management.

"Water use is high up the Government's priority list with legislation being proposed to parliament. Last year's dry summer has added to the urgency, so businesses need to act now," said the BPC's Mark Prentice. "It's a dilemma facing each business that uses water. We have to tackle this issue head-on now or using water in the future will become more difficult.

"The UKIA conference is an excellent opportunity to get the facts and question those involved to be able to start securing water for the future. The BPC is offering £30 off the registration fee to all levy payers and corporate members," he added.
