Competition rife at English top-fruit auction

Pre-sale demand for English dessert apples and pears was “very sharp” at this year’s Horsmonden Hard Fruit Sale last Friday.

Some 335 acres of top fruit in 43 lots were catalogued and quality Conference pears and Gala, Braeburn and Queen Cox dessert apples fared well at the auction to sell off orchard fruit to third parties.

Conference and Comice pears sold at £3,727 per acre or £8 per bushel to average £2,335 per acre. Gala, Queen Cox and Braeburn reached £4,833 per acre and £4.36 per bushel to average £2,118 per acre and £3.02 per bushel.
