The regulator has reportedly written to all bidders for the Safeway store chain detailing the factors under consideration as it carries out its enquiries.

It has apparently received more evidence from interested parties and market competitors as well as other individuals and organisations with a stake or interest in the matter.

Although it has not come to any conclusions, the commission is reported stating that a Morrison's-Safeway merger could be pro-competitive as it would create a fourth, powerful national player in the multiple retail market in the UK.

The August 12 deadline originally set by the commission for its investigations may also be extended.

Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda as well as Morrison's have all bid for Safeway.
