Colourful spuds get royal wedding fever

Seed potatoes have joined the cluster of tea towels, mugs, plates and t-shirts that have been released to commemorate the royal wedding.

A limited edition range of red, white and blue seed potatoes has been launched to mark Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding next month.

The patriotic potatoes - Highland Burgundy Reds, British Queens and Salad Blues - have been created by GardeningExpress.co.uk at a cost of £5.99 per bag.

Each bag contains four seed potatoes of each of the three varieties for planting.

Highland Burgundy Red date back to 1936 when they were used to add colour to a meal for the Duke of Burgundy. The potato is red inside with a ring of white flesh under the skin.

The aptly-named British Queen is over 100 years old and is highly prized for its yield, shape, floury texture and delicious flavour.

Salad Blue was first grown in Scotland in the 1900s and the skin and flesh are both a strong deep blue.

The site’s owner Chris Bonnett said: “We’re going royal wedding crazy and thought why not group some of Britain’s finest and most colourful spuds together to celebrate the happy moment.

“These spuds will cook up a tasty treat for any Royal Wedding dinner party, or for a family plate of chips once the nuptials are over.”

He added: "I'm sure they've already got catering sorted, but if they'd like to tuck into some great home grown veg William and Kate are more than welcome to a sample."
