Colombian government backs horticulture

The Colombian government is committing peso150 billion (£41.4 million) in export incentives to the banana, flower and foliage sectors.

The deal was announced by farm minister Andrés Arias last week.

The minister said the funds will go to supporting food-safety and post-harvest handling, and maintaining employment.

Those companies wishing to benefit from the new funding have until April 18 to apply through the Colombian authorities via the offices with which their crops are registered.

If producers are accepted and all their paperwork is in order, a press release from the Colombian ministry of agriculture stated they could receive their payments as early as May, and certainly by August.
