Cobnuts on market too early

The Association of Kentish Cobnuts Growers has warned that British cobnuts are being sold “not fit for purpose” ahead of the season’s start.

John Cannon, president of the association, has revealed that retailers have been able to buy cobnuts this week at one of London’s wholesale markets that were too immature to eat. “They were virtually empty, with kernels the size of an apple pip,” he told FPJ. “That really isn’t the point; you sell the nuts when they are full. Our association has for some 18 years now been trying to advise growers when cobnuts are ready to harvest. For those who like to consume then when they are green and succulent, the first week of September is usually about right.”

Cannon, who has his own production of cobnuts at Roughway Farm in Tonbridge, added that some varieties such as White Filbert may be a little earlier than September, but for those consumers who like cobnuts with a fuller, nuttier flavour, St Philbert’s Day on September 22 is a good guide as to when you should start eating them.
