Co-operative raids rivals in senior recruitment drive

The Co-operative has laid down a statement of intent by appointing several well-known industry figures to its staff.

Former Tesco Group Food Sourcing director Matt Hood is leaving the supermarket to take up the role of head of commercial trading for dairy, chilled prepared foods and protein at the chain.

Hood is one of three new heads of commercial trading to be appointed at The Co-operative.

The others are Ian Martin, who joins from Asda, where he held a number of category director positions; and CJ Antal Smith, who also leaves Asda, where she is currently category trading director for emerging markets.

Martin will handle the beers, wines and spirits sector, while Smith will run core grocery, impulse and non-edible grocery.

Mark Owen, the former head of commercial chilled and frozen categories at The Co-operative, also moves to become the new head of commercial trading for fuel and non-food turnover.

Mike Owen continues as head of commercial trading for produce but will also fill in on Smith's new role until she arrives.

The Co-operative Food's commercial director Mike Osmond said: "We are embarking on a strategic programme to deliver ambitious commercial trading levels, and I am confident that these key appointments will complement and strengthen our existing commercial and senior management teams."
