The Co-operative has set itself quite a task by aiming to make 90 per cent of all possible products Fairtrade.

It’s a laudable initiative, of course, but one that could present many a challenge during times of supply disruption or unexpected issues such as last year’s ash cloud.

One of the most interesting talking points surrounding The Co-op’s accession to the ‘big five’ is how it can balance its reputation for ethical sourcing with the demands of price competition that come with being one of the industry’s major players.

It’s no secret that the retailer has been putting closer scrutiny on suppliers since the purchase of Somerfield, and sources say it is starting to think more like one of the big retailers. It now has to square this circle with the ethics of Fairtrade sourcing.

The extent to which others try to replicate the model will also be fascinating to watch.

Meanwhile, we’re coming up to that time of year when we start to think about the Oscars of the fresh produce industry, the Re:fresh awards.

This year has been tough for many in the industry, and yet despite that there are many superb examples of businesses investing, innovating and coming up with ways to succeed and grow.

Perhaps more than ever this year is the time to showcase the strength of the industry, so I would urge you to enter one of the various categories featured in the awards.

It looks set to be a wonderful evening hosted by the hilarious Hugh Dennis. Entries are only open for a few more weeks so head over to www.refresh.uk.com to submit your entry.
