According to a report on convenience-store.co.uk, The Co-operative Group considers itself a player in the likely bidding war for Somerfield.

As reported last week on freshinfo, Somerfield, is believed to have appointed investment bank Citigroup to deal with bids, although there has been no official confirmation.

The Co-op has just enjoyed record Christmas sales and a spokesman said at the time of the release of the results that the group is looking to grow its business by acquisition “if an appropriate opportunity arose”.

C-Store quotes an industry insider saying that Somerfield would be a good fit for the Co-operative Group: "It wouldn't surprise me if they were to put in a bid as Somerfield's store sizes would suit them well."
