Steve Murrells moves over from meat business Tulip

The Co-operative Group has hired Steve Murrells as chief executive of its food business, taking over from Tim Hurrell who retired last year.

The 46-year-old will move over from his role as UK chief executive at Danish meat company Tulip in July.

Before that he held a senior role at Tesco, worked as CEO for One Stop, helped integrate Dobbies garden centre business and worked in buying and trading for Sainsbury's.

Murrells said he the company has made strong progress in its food section.

“The Co-operative Group has made enormous strides in its food business and this is an exciting time to be leading the team as we focus on delivering the full potential of The Co-operative brand for the benefit of our customers and members,” he said.

The group has also announced Sean Toal is being promoted from his role as commercial director of food to the new position of chief operating officer food. He will report to Murrells.

Group chief executive, Peter Marks, said: “As a result of the acquisition and integration of Somerfield, The Co-operative Group has experienced phenomenal growth, and is once again a major force in food retailing.
