The Co-operative Group topped an excellent year with a double win at this year’s Re:fresh awards.

It became the first UK retailer to win the Fresh Direct Overall Produce Trader of the Year award, while also scooping the QV Fresh Approach Multiple Retailer of the Year accolade.

In a year that included the high -profile integration of Somerfield into its fold, the retailer landed the gong ahead of a strong field of representatives from the foodservice, packing and wholesale sectors, among others.

In 2008, 700 refits were completed, as The Co-operative invested more than £500 million over the last two years in a programme that has created a more attractive and effective showcase for its produce, with immediate positive effects. The focus has been on delivering the right range to stores, and a consistent offer, with quality and availability to the fore.

The chain has spent the last 18 months implementing a far-reaching strategy that aims to drive significant improvements through the business, while strengthening links with stakeholders, including growers and suppliers.

This approach analysed what needed to be done to provide produce in a way that gave consumers solutions matching their requirements. The range is tailored to offer consumers maximum choice, from a Simply Value white potato to a classic British Maris Piper or a Truly Irresistible Baby Beetroot with Sweet Chilli Marinade.

The well established ethical stance of The Co-operative, which is a high-profile supporter of Fairtrade, British farming and the environment, among many causes, is being communicated to a wider audience, as the Manchester-based retailer steps up to being the undisputed fifth-largest supermarket group in the UK.

Morrisons, last year’s Multiple Retailer winner, and Booths, which have both coped admirably with the recession, were also nominated for the award, presented at the London Marriott hotel last night.
