Co-op carbon pledge pays off

The Co-operative Group has scooped this year’s Business Commitment to the Environment award after reducing its carbon emissions by 86 per cent.

The company, which operates the Co-op food stores among other businesses, has also introduced a policy that prohibits it from investing in “any business whose core activity contributes to climate change”.

The awards, established by former British Rail chief Sir Peter Parker in 1975, aim to promote best environmental practice.

The Co-op scooped the main prize after a campaign that led to green electricity accounting for 98 per cent of its utilised energy, and has seen it offer a green mortgage and encourage customers to lobby for carbon dioxide reduction, as well as invest £1.5 million in solar panels for schools.
