The imminent launch of BRC Version 5, the updated IFS Version 5 and the newly branded GlobalGAP have generated plenty of enquiries for certification body CMi over the last few months.

“People have wanted to know the consequences for their business, and there are still a lot of people importing into the UK who do not understand the retailers’ requirements,” said operations manager Grace O’Dwyer. “Lots of people have been asking for clarification about the renewal of GlobalGAP.”

The confusion surrounding certification is far from over, according to CMi international produce director Steve Cox. “With retailers working to differing agendas in today’s competitive world and each looking to give their customers what they believe they want, one thing guaranteed is that food assurance standards are certainly here to stay,” he said.

CMi’s merger with fellow certifying body NSF International last August has proved advantageous for both sides, said O’Dwyer. “We are complementary services - we are strong in Europe and Africa, whereas NSF is very strong in South America, and is also opening up in China and India. The response from our clients to the merger has been very positive,” she said.
