The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) will seek clarification on how agricultural units are defined as part of a compensation package for farmers affected by a proposed new rail link.

High Speed 2 has published its guidelines for people whose properties are blighted by the planned railway between Birmingham and London.

The NFU had previously successfully lobbied to have agricultural units covered under the Exceptional Hardship Scheme (EHS) but says High Speed 2 must be generous with their interpretation of its guidelines.

NFU planning adviser Ivan Moss said: “The definition of agricultural unit seems very restrictive. I trust High Speed 2 will interpret their guidance in a generous way. The proposal has had a major impact on the lives of many of our members so we are seeking clarification of this document.”

Qualification criteria set by High Speed 2 includes property type, location and what efforts have been made to sell.

Previously, only house owners were eligible under the EHS scheme.
