A bumper green grant will see London schoolchildren making some of their first trips to the countryside to see how their food is produced.

A £42,000 grant has been awarded to the Soil Association by the City Bridge Trust (CBT) to fund a year of workshops in London schools followed by visits to organic farms in Essex, Berkshire and Kent.

“Some kids do not know vegetables are grown in the ground and that eggs come from chickens,” said a spokesman from the Soil Association.

Clare Thomas at CBT added: “This grant request was applauded by our committee members. It will be of clear and lasting benefit to London’s environment, helping to give children an insight into the natural world.”
