Lord Haskins

The 2008 City Food Lecture will feature Lord Haskins as its keynote speaker.

The January 29th invite-only event is a fixture in the City of London and food industry calendars, and is organised by the seven City Livery Companies whose roots are in the food industry - namely the Worshipful Companies of Bakers, Butchers, Cooks, Farmers, Fishmongers, Fruiterers and Poulters.

Lord Haskins, farmer, government advisor on food and farming, and previously chairman of Northern Foods, will address the pressing topical issues for the international food industry and relate them back to UK producers and consumers. He will be joined after the lecture by an eminent panel of food luminaries, including Salman Amin, president of Pepsico UK and Ireland, Harriet Lamb director of the Fair Trade Foundation, and professor David Harvey of Newcastle University. Sir Stuart Hampson, recently retired chairman of John Lewis Group and the architect of the rise of Waitrose over the last 20 years will be independent chairman of the panel.

Laurence Olins, a past master of the Fruiterers, is chairman of the 2008 organising committee, as well as the originator of the event, and said that this year, the livery companies are organising and running the lecture without a single, major sponsor, thereby giving organisers the freedom to be independent in choosing the theme, speaker and panel.

The Real Good Food Company will provide the supper and Nestle the wines, while Lockwood Press will supply the event’s printing and publishing, said Olins.
