City awaits Tesco offering

Tesco will have the eyes of the City on it tomorrow [Tuesday] when it releases its third quarter sales figures. There is concern that the UK’s number one supermarket will be the latest retail giant to come in under forecasts.

Analysts have been expecting a four per cent like-for-like sales rise over the key six-week Christmas period, but are now unsure whether Tesco will beat the 3.6 per cent rise registered by Sainsbury’s last week

Tesco unveiled a 5.9 per cent rise in third quarter trading at the same poit last year, but recent TNS figures and a generally gloomy outlook on the retail scene has led to analysts downgrading their expectations.

International sales, particularly those in central Europe, are predicted to be much healthier.
