A bill passed on December 6 by just one vote in the US House of Representatives gives the president more authority to negotiate international trade pacts, which US citrus growers fear will jeopardise the future of their industry.

Growers in Florida worry that their industry could buckle under pressure from a flood of cheaper imports from other sources such as Brazil as the effects of the law, known as fast track, are felt.

The legislation must now go to the Senate for approval.
