Citrus growers face drought

Cirus growers in the Corrientes area of Argentina are seeking state help to try and alleviate the problems caused by drought in the region. Some of the resources they are seeking would be to install irrigation systems.

Some estimates from the region suggest that 70-80 per cent of the citrus crop has been lost due to drought.

Grower groups are seeking credits or subsidies to help in the short term as well as the longer term to help avoid similar problems in the future while the regional authorities consider declaring a state of agricultural emergency as rice crops and livestock are also being affected.

The region grows a full range of citrus crops and producers complain that although rain is often forecast, this rarely materialises or falls in such small quantities as to be ineffective or in urban areas. The Argentinean citrus season traditionally starts in May.
