The call comes from the Tucumán growers' association, ATC, as part of an interdisciplinary study of strategies to improve the competitiveness of the agri-export sector.

'The quality of roads is directly related to the economic success of citrus production,' the ATC report states.

Growers complain that after all their efforts to ensure fruit quality in the field and post-harvest, valuable crops are damaged in transit because of bumpy roads causing fruit breakdown or making it more susceptible to disease.

The ATC warns that if roads are not well maintained, the future of their exports could be in jeopardy.
